Update-ish-type-thingie...

"That the Catholic Church fights for both lives bothers me. There is an obvious greater evil, and the resources of the Church should be marshaled against that evil. Once we're not killing babies, let's discuss capital punishment. But not until then. To do otherwise seems to betray a sense of moral confusion. "

Interesting point. And an issue that makes me politcal before I'm "organized religionist", you know?

In semi related news, my baby cousin, who's 14 (15?) weeks and due in mid-March. Aren't they (since my aunt/uncle don't want to know baby's sex before birth) cute????

87/80 hours for work the last two weeks. And I for some reason agreed to work 6/7 days next week, including closing 4 of those nights. (If they didn't take ALL my overtime plus some out intaxes, this would bother me less...) The HELL was I thinking when I ok'd my boss changing my schedule to this??

    Sebosmile,

Great blog, thanks for the link. One of our team made up his own hell on our blog. Conservative before republican, I like your style!

    Awww, baby pic = lovingness!

W/ regard to the Church and capital punishment, I would have to say that I don't think we have to choose between fighting for the lives of those on death row and the lives of unborn children. We can do both :)

Both lives are equally valuable, as every human being is of equal value before the eyes of God; however, the Church clearly says that ending the practice of abortion is the more important cause. Catholic theology says that the death penalty is completely justifiable in some cases, while abortion never is; capital punishment ends a guilty life, while abortion ends an innocent one.

Not that we should accept the status quo of capital punishment, of course :)

Well, Maggie, luv you too much to get into this in you.

So I'll just have to keep my comments about how raping, murdering scum not being worth the $25,000 plus a year to keep alive in jail.

You know, minus the whole justice thing.

Also, I was wrong. It was 92.5/80. :dies:

    Dear Maggie,

With all due respect, our collective record on protecting the unborn is a little crappy, so I'm not so sure "we can do both." As a nation - forget the rest of the world - we're still exterminating about a million babies a year, 34 or so years running now.

My... unhappiness with the Church results from an experience I had with Joliet's "Faithful Citizenship" program. As I got buried with requests to call my congressman for things like foreign aid and appropriate health care for the incarcerated (this was representative of maybe a week's experience on the e-mail list), it became clear to me that there is a strong contingent of Liberalism - even bordering on Marxism - within the Catholic leadership.

I understand the doctrine (I've read Evangelum Vitae), and I've heard the same "one is worse than the other" message. If we're serious as a faith about being pro-life, how could we possibly divert human and financial resources from the fight? Doesn't that make us complicit from a moral standpoint? And given that there are plenty of Jean-Francois Kerrys and Teddy Kennedys who count themselves among our number, one must seriously consider the question: are we a pro-life faith?

In every denomination, there is a spectrum of conservativism... and I'm beginning to think that Catholics as a whole are far more liberal than they are conservative. It pains me to say so, but how can I conclude differently?

I share your sorrow, my friend. I have seen myself that the Mennonite Church is not far behind.

But thanks be to God, for He has already won the Victory.

So, what, you use my blog for practice and write better things in it then I do?

I can feel the love from here! ;)

Link back to Maggie's blog from her comments (or my main page- one with the Latin name); she always links to her columns from there.
