We actually had a conference a couple months ago at the Scripps School on this topic, to which one of my professors forced me to go. They had one (1) representative from the blogging world (a liberal, of course) and about four other panelists from the MSM. The keynote speaker was Tom Fenton, the former CBS news correspondent. Shannon, you and everyone else probably do not know who he is, because it seems like everyone with three brain cells (or a caretaker with three brain cells) turned off Dan "the Man" Rather a couple decades ago ;)
Anyway, he criticized the media, but from a left-wing perspective. Of course, he had a book to peddle, that's why he came, LOL!
Anyway, everyone just sat there talking about how "it's the public's fault, we're giving them meaningless, sugary "infotainment" because that is what they want" or "it's the fault of the corporations who own the news companies, they are too focused on profits and not providing quality news," Blah blah blah.
Mr. Fenton said that it was the media's fault - for getting lazy, which caused them to switch gears from informing to entertaining and also give in to the corporations.
Nobody noted that it might be the media's fault, because, well, they're lazy, obsessed with fluff, AND biased? Nah ...
One of the panelists even brought up Benedict's election, and said that this was evidence of the conservative "orthodoxy enforcement" that we brave journalists must fight against, in all aspects of life! (Cue corny Superman music) Talk about missing the point. I felt like saying, awww, I didn't know you cared so much about what we did in the Catholic Church, Mr. Secular Media Person ... ;)
