Yes, I'm a natural RED, WHITE and BLUE

Well, it's better then nothing... Right?

Celine has an odd take on this, but at least she calls an unborn baby a baby, right?

Celine Dion Aims for Motherhood Again- "I'm approaching 40 years old, and I have to tend to that," Dion said. "This frozen embryo that is in New York is my child waiting to be brought to life."

Side note/question to Betsy/Maggie: Is artificial insemination still a major no-no in the Catholic church? Or medication a woman might take to increase the odds of pregnancy?

Yes, the Catholic Church teaches that artificial insemination is a biiiiig no-no, because it seperates the conception of the child from the act that defines love: Sex!

With old-fashioned conception, the child is usually the result of Mom and Dad expressing their intimate, deeply felt love for each other. With artificial insemination, it's a result of mechanical technology and cold, mathematical calculation in a lab, courtesy of a white-coated doctor. It's just contrary to human dignity.

The Church also teaches that it's contrary to human dignity to try to place ourselves (in place of God) in control of the beginning of human life. That's why it's also a no-no to bombard a woman's body with fertility pills. Now, if she has a disorder or low hormones or something, it's certainly ok to take a pill to treat the problem. For instance, if a woman isn't ovulating naturally, it's okay to prescribe a low dose of a drug like Clomid that induces ovulation. Or if her hormone levels are off, you can take treatments. Usually infertility is the result of an underlying disorder, so it's permissable to clear that up! The main thing is to treat the underlying condition and not turn the human body into a "machine" that has to be tweaked through a mechanical process of conception until it puts out the right "product" (baby). With a "baby as product" attitude, it's much easier to eliminate the "extra" feutses that frequently occur during the use of fertility drugs. It's really sad to hear how casually people talk about how they concieve their children through artificial insemination or fertility treatments, and then just "dispose" of the "extra" babies :(

Anyway, This rather long article explains the Catholic approach to fertility treatment much better than I do.

I heard somewhere that Celine is supposed to be Catholic ... she's French Canadian, so that usually means a John Kerry Catholic, blehhhh ... Anyway, I wish somebody would let her know that her kid is not "waiting to be brought to life" when it is convenient for her. Human beings are not the product of anybody's whim, even divas like Celine. The baby already IS alive, although his/her parents have decided to lock him/her up in a fridge for the time being. And the decision to give the child life was God's, not hers!

::Burns at the injustice of it all::
